In addition to the specialization in spectacular Japanese and African percussion, Circle Percussion can produce virtually every kind of percussion show. In principle, everything is possible, provided the circumstances allow it.

The concepts described below can be presented for each event as the opening act, intermezzo and/or closing act. But a combination can also be extremely suitable for total-theatre or a full evening’s programme.

‘Taiko’ Drumming (Japanese drumming)

Miyake
The Taikos are played with karate-like, inciting movements, with great speed, power and passion. A strong and penetrating sound.

Odaiko solo
In this traditional Japanese playing-style the Okedo-O Daiko (diameter nearly two metres) is played on both sides. The sound is overwhelming and you can feel the extremes in your belly! This is an impressive and arousing act.

Harumi ‘extended version’
A combination of all the spectacular Japanese styles, such as the above-mentioned styles complemented with “Yatai Bayashi” style, in which the players lie behind the Taikos, generating enormous power.

“Kinetic Painting” (Live Visual Music)

The artist Norman Perryman and Circle Percussion have created this very special performance: music-theatre combined with kinetic visuals, painted live and projected on to the drummers as they play.

Norman Perryman has spent most of his life in the Netherlands, He has an international reputation for his watercolours of famous musicians in action. Yehudi Menuhin once said: ”Perryman is a musician, he makes music with his paint-brush”.

Perryman has also made several films for television and performed with José Carreras, Louis van Dijk, Evelyn Glennie, Yehudi Menuhin, the Netherlands Dance Theatre, Sir Simon Rattle, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and others. He has also performed in New York, Switzerland, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and South Korea. In 1993 BBC Television made a documentary about his work “Concerto for Paintbrush and Orchestra”.

The performance with Circle Percussion is most dramatic. As Perryman paints on specially modified overhead-projectors, his images are projected on to and behind the players on a huge screen. The drummers are flooded with projections of flowing, splashing colours as the brushes dance a carefully prepared choreography that synchronizes perfectly with the music. In combination with the impressive percussion instruments, the result is a breathtaking and spectacular performance of visual art and Japanese percussive power.

Corpus Acrobatics Theater &
Circle Percussion

"The living planet" is a sixty-minute open air spectacle about the creation of the Earth, performed by Corpus Acrobatic Theatre and accompanied by Circle Percussion.
In ancient times people believed that the elements were the indispensable powers that maintained the Earth. Here in the West, four elements were distinguished: Fire, Water, Air and Earth. The importance of the elements as organizing principle in the universe is a recurring theme in the symbolism of cultures all over the world. The elements were also considered to be the vital aspects of the human body. Physical and mental health were a matter of the right balance between the elements, just as in Nature.
“The Big Bang” and the portrayal of the four elements form the basic ingredients of this acrobatic Multimedia Circus. In this setting an international cast of aerial and ground acrobats is moving about, each in their own personal way giving a poetic interpretation of the four elements: Water, Earth, Air and Fire.

The show is particularly suitable for large indoor and outdoor events, festivals and special openings. Its premiere took place on the 18th of September 2004 at the opening of the cultural street festival Fantastival, at the invitation of the city of Oss in the Netherlands.
Due to its overwhelming success the show has been prolonged and may be booked until the end of 2008.
Circle Percussion accompanies “The Living Planet” with impressive Japanese drumming. The combination with the expressive “total” acrobatics of Corpus has turned “The living planet” into a real Multi-media Circus.
